Recreation

Calhoun County Park is a beautiful, quiet area with a number of features for public enjoyment. Throughout the park one can find playgrounds, a ball field, volleyball and basketball courts,  ponds, and a well maintained hiking/bicycling trail.  The park has a large community building, campsites, and shelters available for rent for indoor/outdoor occasions. Due to the location, Calhoun County Park is labeled a "Dark Sky" area, providing wonderful views for stargazers. Photographers enjoy not only the night sky but also the scenic and rustic beauty found within the park. Whether hiking, fishing, geocaching, or going on an outing, Calhoun County Park is an wonderful location to spend time in the outdoors with family and friends!

 

Playgrounds

Calhoun County Park has several large play structures in key locations and offers various activities for children. Structures can be found near the barn and shelters 2,3, and 4. Playgrounds include swing sets, tire swings, slides, and jungle gyms.  Two of the play structures lie along a ridge providing an excellent area to fly a kite on a windy day or sleigh with friends in the winter months!

 

 

Ball Field

The Roger Jarvis Ball Field is located near the park entrance and is frequented by local minor league teams for practices and games. The Ball Field area has a dirt diamond with a cage/backstop and a large outfield, including a concession stand, trash cans, and bleachers. The Ball Field is available for public use when it is not in use by teams. 

 

 

Hiking/Bicycling Trail

 

The Calhoun Park Trail System provides a 3.2 mile dirt trail through the forest surrounding the park. A section of the trail is named in honor of Sgt. Gene A. Vance. This easy to moderate hike/bike ride has several entrance and exit points near the parks main features. The trail is also a popular place for bird-watching, seeing WV wildlife, and geocaching. Nature enthusiasts will appreciate the beauty of this peaceful hike. Community Building

The Herbert C. Smith Community Building is a prominent feature at Calhoun County Park. This 80x32 spacious, 2-story "barn" contains a fully furnished kitchen, two large open rooms, folding tables and chairs, and separate men and women's restrooms with showers.  Before its renovation, this structure served as a "hay barn" when the property was farmland. This building is a popular spot for weddings, parties, reunions, meetings, and other events. Located in close vicinity to the barn are a volleyball & basketball court, playground, and large open field. Full and half day reservations are available and can be booked here.

 

 

Camping

Kitty Wilson Campground is located behind the Community Building and is one of the newest additions at Calhoun County Park. The campground contains eight campsites with electricity, gravel parking area, and picnic table. Water spigots are placed within the campground and bathrooms and showers are located in the Community Building. A bathroom/showerhouse is in the process of development to be used by campers in the future. The campground has a small play structure and is in close proximity to the volleyball/ basketball courts and playground. Heritage Village

Heritage Village is funded, managed, and maintained by The Calhoun County Historical Society. The village has 7 historical structures moved from locations throughout Calhoun County. Buildings found at the village include Stevens School, Jarvis Store, Freed Post Office, Cain Chapel, Stemple Cabin, Starcher Blacksmith Shop, and Stump Carpenter Shop. Shelters

There are four picnic shelters placed around the park which are provided for public use or available for reservation for a small fee. The shelters vary in size and include picnic tables, trash bins, and a freestanding charcoal grill. Shelters 3 and 4 have water and electricity. Shelter locations are within close proximity to playgrounds making it an ideal area to conduct birthday parties and family gatherings. Ponds

Calhoun County Park has four ponds on the grounds with three accessible from the trail system and the 4th accessible from the main road before the park entrance. The pond located near the Community Building has benches, a dock, and trash cans. This pond is one of the popular locations at the park for photography backgrounds, weddings, and fishing.
